Robert Arneson is known for his talent in sculpture, but also has known skills in ceramics and drawing. In the 1960s, Arneson and a few other artists from California decided to let go of the the traditional manufacture of functional items and instead, started using everyday objects to make confrontational statements. This was the beginning of "Funk Art". Arneson is considered the father of the ceramic Funk Art movement.
He is known to star in his own work as well. He has made many different humorous self portraits, such as one with him picking his nose, and another of him as a Californian hipster wearing a jeans jacket. Arneson found a way to make sculptures and drawings humorous, yet controversial.
