This artists style of painting is really interesting to me because its supposed to replicate the pictorial style of magazines from the 1950s-1970s. When looking through different artworks he has done, you can see well known close up portraits of well known people, and you quickly realize he focuses on people from the pop music culture. Phillips' work is interesting because he takes what we see everyday in current magazines and online, but paints these celebrities with an interesting twist. by Leialoha Tucker
This guy's paintings stir up a weird feeling within me. Usually I tend to appreciate well rendered pieces. Portraits that look very similar to their human or real life counterparts usually highly impress me. In this case though I don't feel the same way. Richard Phillips pretty much renders his portraits perfectly, so much so that they look exactly like the pictures from which he recreates them from. For some reason, that's why I don't like it. Somehow I am unable to see the artist's touch through his paintings. To me it just looks like someone took a photo of a celebrity that they find interesting, dropped it into photoshop and put on a paint filter.
