As we explored last week, in the Jay-z music video, we touched on points of what the parameters of art can be defined as and what constitutes the elements are artistic intention. I wanted to continue the conversation through expanding on the perspectives of art through the dimensions and power of media. In the video above, Jonathan Meese is explaining his view of art, existence, people etc. At the same time, in relativity to the Jay-z music video, the video itself is a media form of performance, view, documentation, or perhaps advertising in the mechanism of the youtube/vice media engine.
He speaks on the points of what art is. What it can be. He expresses that everything is toy. Ice cream, our hair, penguin magazines are toys in the eyes of Jonathan Meese. "We must play with all the material we find. When our "playing" is powerful, then it works."
He then passionately expands to the idea that "art is the best ruling power. The dictatorship of art is ideal. And that's why art has to come to power. Art has to take over and everything will be great." This is an interesting point in the video because it shows his natural element of expression and belief. As we were judging the validity of Jay-z's video, we questioned the intention and involvement of other artists in what is considered to be performance art. However, the presence of self belief ,in the frame of what art is to the person, might be a critical value to this conversation. In other words, taste and the mechanism of society could be a heavy factor in determining what qualifies art.
Jonathan Meese is a German painter, sculptor and performance artist. He is based out of Hamburg and Berlin. His work is also composed of multi-media, drawings, collages and writing. His works has been shown in many Contemporary art expositions.
