Jennifer Maestre was born in South Africa in 1959. She graduated from Wellesley College and later on received her BFA degree from Massachusetts College of Art. Meastre, who currently works in Massachusetts is internationally known for her whimsical and unique pencil sculptures, which she constructs out of pencils, nails and string. She receives most of her inspiration from sea urchins, but also creates other unique forms.
Throughout her career, Maestre has experimented with different materials, but eventually settled on her favorite material, pencils, 15 years ago. She has been making pencil-sculptures ever since.
The sculptures are made by cutting up pencils, drilling a whole through each piece, sharpening the pencils, sewing together different sections, and then finally sewing together all the parts to create a finished piece. This process is time consuming and therefore her pieces sell between $1,000 and $8,000.
