Giorgio De Chirico was born in greece, but moved to Paris in the early 1900s. He is well known for being a co-founder of a school of painting, Scuola Metafisica. This school helped "advance a metaphysical agenda by subjecting Renaissance esthetic strategies to 20th century irrationalism". De Chirico is known for often using mannequins and dummies in place of a human model. He does this to liquidate his work of warmth and emotion. He is also known for Influencing the work of the later Surrealists and some would say he is an important precursor to Abstract Expressionism. The piece shown here is his piece, "The Great Machine" in which seems to rise up with different random objects, including a mannequin at the top.
