Claes Oldenburg (born January 28, 1929) is an American sculptor; commonly associated with the Pop Art movement. Claes Oldenburg is known for his playfully surreal (and often mischievous) public sculptures that find new meaning in the everyday objects by expanding them to a gargantuan scale or deflating them into floppy, funny shells. By manipulating the scale and context of ordinary objects, he transforms the ordinary to extraordinary.
What's great about this project is how he makes these objects interact with the environment.
The split button sculpture (http://oldenburgvanbruggen.com/largescaleprojects/splitbutton.htm) is not just one that looks like an ordinary button from extraordinary heights - which (as well as for all his other sculptures) is actually an interesting feat in itself - but also seems like a great place to hang and relax. You could probably hang around inside the holes for shade, or just sit around the edges of the button. The sculpture by the UH Art Building works similarly.
The "Spoonberry and Cherry" (http://oldenburgvanbruggen.com/largescaleprojects/spoonbridge.htm) is my favorite from his works. The cherry stem is actually a fountain so that the cherry glistens in the light, just like a fresh cherry to be eaten. Even during rainy days water would probably drip from the stem like a real cherry. The best part is that if it snows in that area, the sculpture would look like it'd be part of an ice cream sundae! All these outside factors make this an excellent piece.
