Nancy Fouts is an American born artist living and working in London. She graduated from Chelsea College of Art and then the RCA. The overarching theme her work is freedom of thought; Fouts makes art inspired by the naïveté of childhood and by doing so she imagines each of her subjects without preconceptions.
A self proclaimed object hoarder, Fouts follows in the surrealist tradition of marrying unrelated items to turn the everyday into the uncanny. But it’s her knack for clean presentation which really helps these images pack a punch. On the subject of her work, Fouts says; ‘My work is not a comment on religion, nature or indeed anything, it is all about manipulating the object to realise my idea. Everything starts with the idea.’ Her work flips your expectations through visual puns that seek to challenge the viewer to look at things in a different light whilst trying to leave the interpretation of meaning up to them.
