Michael Mapes has created collaged works that are composed of portraits and scientific specimens. The deconstructed photos of dutch master paintings are crafted together to make a single portrait. The presence of deconstruction and reconstruction is a unique element when understanding the meaning of the work. Mapes elaborates, " I've done these works with the use of a visual metaphor suggesting a pseudoscientific method specifically working with materials and processes signifying entomological, biological and forensic science".
The presence of the works has a intimate quality where peering in closely and also has a vast visual appeal when standing in the distance.
